The oxygen crisis that allegedly led to the death of over 30 children at the BRD Medical College cannot have any excuses. It is not a tragedy, nor an accident, it is a massacre. One night and 30 children died.
What exactly happened that night?
The information that the Oxygen pressure is falling down was given to Dr Kafeel (who is the incharge of the Encephalitis ward) at around 2am in the night. He was told that the oxygen will be over in the next one hour.
He immediately realized what it means. And the only solution is to get oxygen cylinders from wherever he can.
But from where to get the cylinders at 2am in the night?
Dr Kafeel made attempts to call up the suppliers and ask for cylinders. But they didn’t pick up the phone.
He called one of his doctor friend and within an hour he managed to get around three cylinders in his car but that lasted hardly for 15minutes.
Not left with any option, he rang his other doctor friends and hospitals in the nearby area and managed to get around a dozen cylinders .
Dr Kafeel then went to the SSB hospital and informed them about the crisis. The SSB authorities immediately provided 10 cylinders and also provided a truck so that the BRD Medical College can manage more cylinders from other places. Eventually, around 30 cylinders were procured this way.
Thus oxygen supply was restored a little bit by the early morning. But it has already taken the toll.
Had he not made that effort, the toll would have been much higher.
But what about those who didn’t do their duty, who knew about the oxygen issue and still ignored it?
It didn’t happen in one day, as per the company who supply the cylinders, the hospital administration was informed many days back.
The life of those children has been deliberately taken away and those behind it must be severely punished, be it the hospital administration or any other authorities.
This is not what our children deserve 70years after Independence.
