Tamil star Vijay’s new flick, Mersal, while courting controversies on its run to success, has earned the ire of the medical professionals too.
IMA and social media groups of doctors were critical of how the movie portrays the doctors. And they have the right to do so as generalization of any profession is bound to have a rebuttal, specially if it is done in a negative way.
Tamil Nadu IMA appealed to other state units not to go to the courts because that will only attract more publicity.
Reacting to the issue, Dr. V.G. Pradeep Kumar, Kerala State president of IMA, said that the film is targeting a particular profession in the name of freedom of expression.
“I personally know quite a few who had preferred to take treatment here rather than in Singapore, as the movie portrays Singapore with free and better treatment”, he added.
A section of lawyers from Coimbatore has thrown a challenge against the director, actors Vijay and Vadivelu and producers that says the group is ready to pay Rs1 crore if such statement regarding Singapore is found to be true. If not, the group should be given that amount.
The movie makes a statement that doctors should take Rs5 as consultation fee.
One social media campaign on doctors groups say – “ We are ready to give consultation for Rs 5, if rest of the society agrees to provide their services to us at Rs 5.”
“There are black sheep in every profession, but it does not mean that the film makers portray the entire professionals in modern medicine as looters. There should be a balanced view,” one doctor said. Even the makers of the film would be depending on modern medicine for treatment, he said.
“People are quick to take to negative thoughts. And many such negative things against modern medicine are floating in the social media.” he said.
There is already too much negativity, bringing more non-verified facts only creates more negativity instead of improving the situation.
