What is happening to the healers? What is happening to those who are suppose to heal others but are failing short of taking care for themselves?
Multiple suicide incidents in last few months among doctors and certainly this frequency cannot be a coincidence .
The 26-year-old lady doctor of the Delhi-AIIMS committed suicide in Kerala’s Kochi hotel on January 19, 2018. Dr Mamta Rai, a resident of Jamshedpur, Jharkhand, was working in the dermatology department of Delhi-AIIMS.
She left a suicide note mentioning that she was battling depression and was unable to cope with it. Hence, she was committing suicide, said the note, informed the state police.
"I am a patient of depression. I am fed up of fighting it. I am quitting. No one is responsible for this. Sorry Pappa," reads the suicide note of the doctor.
Dr Rai had come to Kochi for attending a conference on dermatology on January 18, 2018. She was found hanging from the ceiling fan in the hotel room. She was brought down from the ceiling fan by the hotel staff and taken to a nearby hospital where she was declared dead.
The police have recovered pills for depression from the room where Dr Rai committed suicide. The sub-inspector of Kerala police probing the case informed the media that preliminary investigations suggest that the woman committed suicide. He said that she has also specified her trouble of depression in the note.
Dr Vijay Gurjar, Ex-RDA President, Delhi-AIIMS, informed that Dr Mamta Rai was a resident in dermatology department and completed the MD in December, 2017. “She was very hardworking. Don’t know why our residents get so hopeless that they take such irreversible steps. There is urgent need of intervention in such cases” added Dr Gurjar
Even Facebook paid a tribute to the young lady by putting prefix ‘Remembering’ before her profile.
The situation has become really alarming, as stress level is continuously increasing and is bound to increase further as the doctor-patient relationship has hit the new low.
Doctor community must find out some way to battle this stress and find some time for themselves. For the same purpose, recently an edition has been made in the Hippocratic Oath by the headline – “Take care of yourself”.
