A 48-year-old doctor collapsed in the labour room and died minutes after reviving a newborn to life in East Midnapore district. The incident happened at Patanda Primary Health Centre (PHC).
Dr Bibhas Khutia, a general duty medical officer at the PHC had just helped Sonali Kulia Maji deliver a baby girl. The newborn showed no movement after the normal delivery procedure. The doctor immediately put the baby in the warmer and managed to resuscitate the new born. Just as he revived the baby, he collapsed.
The lone nurse, assisting him immediately took the warmer with the revived baby away from the doctor’s hand and placed it on a table. Dr Khutia collapsed on the ground. He was lifted to a stretcher by the other staff in the PHC and rushed to the nearby Panskura Super-specialty Hospital where doctors declared him dead on arrival. Doctors said that Khutia had suffered a massive heart attack.
Known to be a workaholic, Khutia had been posted in the Patanda PHC for more than a decade and half. He himself had developed the labour room so that in this unit in rural Bengal could serve well to expecting women in the vicinity. Those who knew him well said that he would readily camp himself in the PHC 24 hours whenever there was a manpower crisis.
“When the new born did not cry after delivery, Khutia placed her in the labour room’s warmer and started pumping the baby’s heart. He slumped to the ground just as the new born started crying,” said a co-worker.
“We salute his dedication while mourning his untimely death”.
