“But the doctor I met earlier said that I had this problem and I must take these medicines.” a curious patient will say.
True there might be difference in opinion of two doctors, not because they are good or bad but because medicine is an experimental science, might be because they have different core expertise regarding that disease.
Second opinion as such is a nice thing, because it brings in perspective expertise of two brains, who must have observed different outcomes of a treatment.
It becomes a negative thing when we express our opinion the following way:
Second opinion – “what should i say, you know very well yourself”. A very common sentence, in which nothing has been said directly but everything has been said indirectly.
Second opinion – “ we get so many cases from them”
Second opinion – “He/she doesn’t know anything , who asked you to go there, totally wrong diagnosis “.
And the cycle and the statements continues.
A patient seeks 2nd opinion because you never know who might hit the right reason of your disease, as everyone thinks in a different way, as medicine is so much about experimentation, as every treatment work differently for different people and there are so many options.
But giving opinion this way is doing the biggest harm than anything else.
These expressions bring down the reputation of whole of the fraternity. It creates a doubt in every mind, it gives patients a legitimate statement to make to other patients. It makes them think that most have very poor knowledge and that in turn create more doubts and distrust.
There are better ways to put your point, better ways to give a genuine opinion to a patient, better ways to tell that the fellow colleague might have thought in some other perspective.
Only the respect for each one will bring respect to all.

It doesn’t include all cases
Confirmed cases aren’t all cases. They only include people who tested positive. Testing rules and availability vary by country.
