I recently visited a doctor friend of mine at his clinic. He had just finished his OPD and was sitting at his desk. We decided to go out for coffee to a cafeteria just outside the clinic. While getting up he opened a drawer and took a gun from it and put it in his bag. At first I couldn’t understand what he was doing with a gun. Looking at me he smiled and said- he got the gun license recently and bought this gun. Out of shock I asked what is it for?
He replied-“ It’s very common nowadays, many doctors are applying for gun licenses. Three out of four doctors in India have reported some kind of verbal or physical abuse in the work place. If a doctor is not able to save a patient, they blame the doctor saying the doctor killed the patient. There is a difference between ‘not able to save’ and ‘doctor killed a patient’. You hand over the bill and you get to hear what is it for. And asking for a bill specially becomes difficult if the patient gets some complications. This has become a routine lately where the attendants get angry if you are late even by a few minutes, even if you were busy handling some other emergency.
He took a break and said with a grim face that people don’t understand the nuances of Medical science. People fail to appreciate the difference between” their expectations and our limitations”. They want a perfect and precise solution for each and every disease, which is not possible in many cases. This gets further complicated because of corruption in some segments of healthcare which straightway puts a blot on every healthcare professional. Then he admitted a bitter truth – “corruption has creeped in every segment of the society but still we are the least corruptible profession”. I never wish that there comes a situation for using this gun but then………..”.
Sitting on the other side I was speechless as I pitied over the present condition of such a noble profession. Just wondering how a doctor can treat a patient with best of his ability if half of his mind is involved in handling and being wary of the anger of the society. Whose loss is it ? – the society should try to find an answer for that.
Who could have ever imagined a DOCTOR WITH A GUN !
